What Makes a Great Change Leader

Message from the Founder

Change isn’t just strategic. It’s human. Being a strong change leader is about more than setting a vision and leaving the rest up to chance; it’s about helping people move through uncharted territory with clarity, confidence, and compassion.

At Apogy, we think of change leadership as a three-legged stool. Without all three legs—the right skills, behaviors, and mindset—the stool wobbles and team members feel the disconnect between themselves and their leaders.

Equipping yourself to lead requires having the right skills. Change doesn’t succeed because it’s well-intentioned; it succeeds when leaders develop the skills to lead well, including the tools to guide people through resistance and into resilience. Apogy’s ART Model for Individual Change™ is a simple but powerful framework that helps leaders understand what people need to make lasting change stick:

  • Aware: People understand what’s changing and why it matters. They understand the rationale.
  • Ready: Their questions and concerns have been acknowledged and addressed. They feel seen, heard, and supported.
  • Trained: They have the confidence, knowledge, and skills to succeed in the new reality.

We pair ART with our 3D Model for Organizational Change™—Define, Design, Deploy—to help leaders bring clarity and structure to complex transitions.

In addition to providing the right skills to succeed, we teach you how to model the right behaviors for success. We’ve built the foundations of conscious change leadership into every approach at Apogy. We teach you how to develop and lead with self-awareness and strong emotional intelligence, recognizing that self-leadership is essential for success. We pair self-leadership with training on core power skills, including the 4 Cs:

  • Connection – Build authentic relationships and trust.
  • Communication – Use clear, kind, and mindful language.
  • Collaboration – Co-create solutions and share ownership.
  • Compassion – Understand the emotional side of change.

Finally, and perhaps most critically, we focus on helping change leaders cultivate the right mindset rooted in growth to fuel adaptability and courage. At Apogy, we encourage change leaders to ask:

  • Am I showing up with curiosity or a desire to be in control?
  • Am I focused on proving myself, or improving myself?
  • What beliefs or fears might I need to unlearn?

I won’t sugarcoat it: becoming a great change leader requires effort, perseverance, and a willingness to grow. The most effective change leaders don’t just “manage” change—they embody it by showing up with the right skills, behaviors, and mindset to lead effectively.

If you want to lead purposefully, navigate uncertainty with clarity, and empower others through change, I invite you to build and strengthen your change leadership muscles with Apogy. Become an Apogy Certified Change Leader or contact [email protected] to discuss custom training options.
